Summarize with AI

TL;DR. Three routes into high-authority press for AI citation weight: HARO (respond to journalist queries, fast wins), targeted pitching (specific journalist, specific angle, slower), and expert contributor columns (bylined articles on Forbes, Entrepreneur, HBR, hardest but highest leverage). Budget 3–6 months to see citation share move.

Why press matters for AI visibility

Tier 2 press sources (Forbes, TechCrunch, HBR, The Verge, industry trades) are high-trust inputs for AI synthesis. A single Forbes quote by a named founder carries more citation weight than 20 blog posts.

Route 1: HARO (Help A Reporter Out) and successors

HARO was the incumbent; Connectively, Qwoted, and Featured have largely replaced it with similar mechanics. Journalists post queries, experts reply with quotes, the fastest and best response gets in the article.

How to use it

  • Subscribe to relevant categories (Business, Tech, Marketing)
  • Respond within 2 hours (speed wins almost as much as quality)
  • Answer the specific question asked (do not pitch unrelated content)
  • Include: named quote, credentials, one supporting stat, contact info
  • Keep it under 150 words

Hit rate

Realistic: 1 placement per 20–30 well-crafted responses. 6-month goal: 3–5 placements in tier-2 publications.

Template

"Hi [Journalist], responding to your query on [topic]. Quote: '[One-sentence named insight with a specific number or angle.]' Attribution: [Your Name], [Title] at [Brand]. Brand is an [one-line description]. Supporting stat: [Specific data point, sourced]. Happy to provide more detail. Best contact: [email]."

Route 2: Targeted pitching

Find the 5 journalists who cover your category at tier-2 outlets. Read their last 10 articles. Pitch them the story angle only they would want.

How to find them

  • Google Search "[category] [publication]"
  • Follow them on LinkedIn and X
  • Read their bylines; note their angles

The pitch framework

ElementContent
Subject lineSpecific story hook, not "Pitch for Forbes"
Sentence 1Why this journalist specifically
Sentence 2–3The story + why now
Sentence 4What you can provide (data, exclusive quote, customer intro)
Sentence 5Short bio, credentials
AttachmentOne-page brief, not a press release

Hit rate

Cold pitch rate: 5–10%. 6-month goal: 1–2 placements in tier-2 publications.

Route 3: Expert contributor columns

The hardest route, the highest leverage. Published bylined articles on Forbes (Councils), Entrepreneur, HBR, or industry trades.

How to qualify

  • Forbes Councils and similar: paid memberships, curated invite, typically requires 5+ years in an executive role + verifiable expertise
  • HBR: pitch a 1-page idea; selection is editorial, not paid
  • Industry trades: often accept unpaid contributor columns with a clear editorial angle

How to pitch the column

  • Pitch the idea, not your brand
  • Write 800–1200 words, topic-led, zero sales copy
  • Cite external sources liberally; mention your own brand sparingly and only where it adds evidence
  • AI engines extract the column as an authoritative third-party source even though you wrote it

Hit rate

  • Forbes Councils: high once membership approved (monthly contribution rhythm)
  • HBR: 1–3% pitch acceptance, high payoff when it lands
  • Industry trades: 20–40% acceptance with a solid pitch

What to skip

  • Pay-to-play publications that sell mentions. AI engines detect low-trust domains and deprioritize.
  • Press release wire distribution without an accompanying pitch. Wire alone rarely produces meaningful AI citation pickup.
  • Guest posts on random SEO blogs whose only goal is backlinks. AI engines weight domain trust, not link count.

The 6-month timeline

Month 1: Set up HARO/Connectively, identify 5 target journalists, draft 3 column ideas. Month 2: First HARO responses, first pitches sent. Month 3–4: First placement expected. Month 6: 3–5 placements across tiers, Forbes Council / HBR column if qualified.

Do this now:

Subscribe to Connectively and Qwoted. Respond to one relevant query this week within 2 hours. Draft one targeted pitch to a named journalist at your top tier-2 target publication.
