TL;DR. A Content Gap is one of two things: the content on a topic does not exist on your site, or it exists but AI engines cannot extract a clean answer from it. The second case is more common, more painful, and more fixable. Four patterns explain almost every instance: BLUF, Justification, Freshness, Evidence. Fix these and most non-branded prompts move within a quarter.
The two cases
Case 1: Missing content. You have no page answering the target prompt. AI engines will either cite a competitor or a third party (Reddit, G2, Forbes, YouTube). Fix: write the page. Use the 9 AI-Citable Content Rules from lesson 5.2 as the build spec.
Case 2: Content exists but is not AI-citable. You have a page that covers the topic, but the answer is buried under marketing fluff, the claims are qualitative, the page has not been updated in 18 months, or the structure does not chunk cleanly. Fix: rewrite the page to pass the 4 pattern tests below. This is where most Content Gap work happens.
The 4 patterns (playbook)
| Pattern | Symptom | Fix preview | Lesson |
|---|---|---|---|
| BLUF | Answer buried under marketing fluff | 40–80 word direct answer in the first paragraph | 5.3 |
| Justification | No pros/cons, tables, or "best for X" claims | Add justification attributes (positive keywords) | 5.4 |
| Freshness | Not updated in 12+ months | Refresh cadence + visible "Last updated" line | 5.5 |
| Evidence | Claims are qualitative, not data-backed | Named stats, analyst sources, dated data points. Don't just use AI for this, they still hallucinate too much and can make up reasonable-sounding but false claims | 5.6 |
These are not additive add-ons. They are extraction preconditions. If any one of them fails on your priority page, it will decrease your chances of getting cited.
Why Content Gaps are the highest-leverage fix
Three reasons.
- Most controllable. SEO gaps often require engineering time. PR gaps require months of third-party relationship building. Content gaps are yours alone to fix. A single writer can ship two to five per week.
- Fastest signal. BLUF rewrites move Detection Rate within 2–4 weeks on re-indexed pages. PR work takes months. Once included, it will be noticeable within days.
- Compounds. A page that passes all 4 patterns keeps earning citations for years, not weeks.
Where to start
From your Module 3 audit you have one priority prompt and one priority page. Open that page and run it through the 4 pattern tests (one lesson each, 5.3–5.6). Fix the weakest pattern first. Re-audit in 4 weeks.
Do this now:
Open your priority page. Read only the first paragraph. Answer yes/no: does it directly answer the target prompt? If no, you have a BLUF gap. Go to lesson 5.3.
